    What is a Mission Statement?

    A business mission is a statement consisting of the; who, what, where and how of a company. It describes the companyโ€™s chosen path to achieving its vision. It defines the scope of a company including its customers, its core products/service, its values and its geographic territory.

    Why is the Mission Statement important?

    Guides Decision-Making: It acts as a framework for making decisions that align with the company’s goals and values.

    Aligns Stakeholders: A clear mission statement unites employees, management, and stakeholders around a common goal.

    Differentiates from Competitors: It highlights what makes the business unique and sets it apart from competitors.

    Defines Purpose and Direction: A mission statement explains why the business exists and what it aims to achieve, giving clarity to everyone involved.

    Inspires and Motivates: A strong mission statement connects daily work to a bigger purpose, boosting employee motivation and engagement.

    How to create your Mission:

    Step 1: Have a clear vision to set the pace for your mission statement. The idea is for the mission to spell out a pathway towards your vision.

    For example: Vivo Fashion Group’s vision is โ€œAfrica dressing the worldโ€.

    A look at the above vision begs the question, how? And thatโ€™s where your mission comes in.

    Important note: Your mission must be aligned to your vision in terms of size and ambition. You need an Audacious mission to achieve an audacious vision.

    Step 2: Reflect on who your customers are, where they are and what your core service is;
    1. Customers
    2. Where they are
    3. Core Business

    For example:  Vivo Fashion Group clients are busy working class women of all ages. These are either entrepreneurs or corporate executives, with tight time schedules and are financially conscious. Vivo intends to create a fashion house where every woman, young or old feels their dressing needs are taken care of.

    Step 3: Piece together these three parts to make your mission statement. Write it in many different ways until you find the version that works best for you.

    For example: ย Vivo Fashion Group’s mission statement: โ€œCreating economic opportunities in Africa through fashion.โ€

    Qualities of a Mission Statement

    A good mission statement will allow the reader to make a pretty good guess at which company it is just by what it says. It should be;

    1. Clear
    2. Concrete
    3. Definitive
    4. Inspiring

    So, as you pick out a statement that describes the future in your business, pick out something that inspires and excites you, your team and everyone that reads it.
