In the heart of Uganda, where the fertile lands have immense potential but face challenges, on woman is changing the game—no flashy product, no big investors, just pure grit and a mobile phone. Enter Susan Nassolo, the founder of Ever Grow Organics, a social enterprise that’s shaking up the agricultural scene with eco-friendly fertilisers that don’t just nurture the soil but also uplift local farmers.
Recognising a Real Problem
Susan’s journey didn’t start in a boardroom or a startup incubator; it began with a personal dilemma. Like many farmers in Uganda, she witnessed the struggle of her community to access affordable and effective fertilisers. The high prices and harmful chemicals used in traditional products were doing more harm than good, not to mention the environmental toll they took.
“I realised that my parents and other farmers were facing the same challenge of production reduction,” she recalls.
That moment of clarity became a turning point. Susan knew that something had to change, and instead of waiting for someone else to take action, she grabbed her mobile phone and launched into action.
The Birth of Ever Grow Organics
With no formal training, a degree in agronomy, or startup capital, Susan turned to the most accessible tool she had – a smartphone. She dove headfirst into online research, connecting with agricultural experts, experimenting with organic materials, and tapping into the traditional knowledge of local farmers.
“At the time, I had no idea a phone could be a tool for research,” she says. “But every night, I was on it, learning how to make fertilisers and how to start a business.”
What began as small trials soon gained traction among local farmers hungry for sustainable solutions. The idea? Create affordable, eco-friendly fertilisers that not only support agricultural growth but also promote sustainability. The result – Ever Grow Organics.

Getting Ever Grow Organics off the ground
- Building the right team – A key factor behind Ever Grow Organics’ success is Susan’s thoughtful and strategic approach to building her team. She brought together people whose skills and perspectives complemented her own, key skills like marketing, production, and logistics. This helped create a culture of collaboration. Her approach didn’t just lighten the load; it also sparked innovation and drove the business forward. This mindset has been essential in turning her vision into a thriving, innovative enterprise.
- Learning financial discipline – Like many new entrepreneurs, Susan faced challenges in handling the financial aspects of her business. One of her first mistakes was combining personal expenses with business funds, a mistake that nearly jeopardized Ever Grow Organics’ future. This tough experience taught her an essential lesson: the necessity of keeping business and personal finances completely separate. Even when she faced personal financial difficulties, Susan chose not to use business resources. This discipline, while difficult, was crucial in protecting the company’s stability.
- Market responsiveness – In its early stages, Ever Grow Organics focused on producing solid fertilisers in bulk. But valuable feedback from farmers soon revealed a gap between the product and real-world needs. Many expressed frustration with the bulky packaging and the long wait for visible results. What they needed were solutions that were easy to transport, simple to apply, and delivered quicker impact in the field. Susan listened. Rather than clinging to her original product model, she treated this feedback as a catalyst for improvement. This willingness to adapt quickly and meaningfully to customer input became one of Ever Grow Organics’ defining strengths. By staying responsive to the market, Susan not only improved her product but also deepened trust with her customers, laying the groundwork for stronger loyalty and steady business growth.
- Support systems that shape success – Even though Susan didn’t start her journey with formal business coaches, she was deliberate in creating a solid support network around her.She looked for informal mentors, individuals who provided honest feedback, listened to her ideas, and kept her accountable as she explored new challenges. This illustrates that effective mentorship doesn’t always stem from formal programs. It can develop naturally through connections with family, friends, or knowledgeable professionals willing to share their expertise. What is most important is having a mindset focused on continuous learning and the humility to seek and implement constructive feedback. For Susan, this willingness was essential for her growth as a leader and for establishing a more solid business.
