Noah Walakira, eager to tackle the growing unemployment in his community, founded the Namirembe Sweater Makers at 14. Using his knitting skills taught by his late grandmother and earnings from petty jobs, he started a community-based organization that knits sweaters to combat unemployment. Of which earnings were used to put himself and other employees through school.
Some years down the line, Namirembe sweaters employs 20 people, produces about 500 sweaters monthly, and offers vocational training to the community’s youth for free. Noah’s venture presently partners with 43 schools countrywide and school uniform companies. And although his company started by knitting sweaters, it has diversified to produce uniforms and school supplies.
He plans on expanding his venture by setting up similar projects across Uganda, and by purchasing own equipment enabling delivery on large scale contracts. He has been featured on CNN, Bella Naija, The Monitor, and other Media outlets. He plans to open up a bigger place and employ more people.
