Déyélin Gilles Bossa: From Cassava Fields to Community Transformation

In Benin’s cassava-rich regions, young entrepreneur Déyélin Gilles Bossa is proving that business can be more than profit. As a young founder, he runs Fenou Benin, a growing cassava processing company that isn’t only feeding local households but creating life-changing jobs — especially for women.

Fenou Benin started small with only four staff members. Today, it employs over fifteen people, with women making up the majority of the team. For many, this isn’t just employment. It’s an opportunity for economic independence in a sector where women often remain undervalued despite doing 60-80% of the agricultural work in Africa (FAO).

Cassava: Feeding Communities and Driving Change
Cassava is a staple crop in Benin, consumed daily as gari and tapioca. But its potential goes beyond the dinner table. Across Africa, cassava feeds about 500 million people (IFAD) and serves as an income source for millions of farmers. Yet, post-harvest losses remain high due to poor processing and storage.

Gilles saw this gap as an opportunity to build Fenou Benin into a company that reduces waste, adds value to local harvests, and uplifts the community. “The women are deeply involved in processing,” he says proudly. They peel, grate, sieve, and roast cassava into gari, and carefully extract starch for tapioca, adding coconut water or orange juice to create unique flavours.

Jobs That Change Lives

In Africa, agriculture employs 54% of the labour force (World Bank) but remains dominated by low-income informal work. Fenou Benin is challenging this by formalising cassava processing jobs and training staff in food safety, production efficiency, and business skills.

On their impact page, Fenou Benin shares that they’ve supported dozens of women and youth since inception, creating consistent income streams that improve household food security and education access (Agro Fenou Benin). For women, having a stable job in cassava processing means more than a salary — it builds confidence, financial freedom, and community status.

Leadership That Puts People First
Gilles’ approach to leadership is rooted in patience and mentorship. “If you’re quick to get angry, you’ll keep reshuffling your team and facing the same problems,” he says. By investing in his staff, he’s created a committed workforce that sees Fenou Benin not just as a job, but as their business too.

Hiring decisions have been strategic. His first employee was chosen not just for her sales skills but for her potential to grow with the company. Though letting people go has been tough, he believes the right team is what defines a business’s future.

Building a Business That Lasts
Fenou Benin didn’t become successful overnight. Gilles focused on mastering cassava processing before innovating flavours and production methods. He built strong systems, prioritised staff training, and maintained steady growth.

His journey is proof that real change starts with small, deliberate steps: using local resources, empowering people, and reinvesting in community development.
