2017 Anzisha Media Prize Release

Anzisha Prize honors journalists, radio personalities and TV broadcasters from across Africa with the Anzisha Media Prize.

Recognizing the immense potential for media partners to inspire, the Anzisha Prize invests to find and celebrate young journalists, radio and television broadcasters across Africa who share the stories of youth entrepreneurship. Our top nominees were sponsored to meet our finalists in Johannesburg, and the winner will be sponsored to cover a story of youth entrepreneurship on the continent.

The Anzisha Prize is a pan-African award and support program for youth entrepreneurship. The Anzisha Prize supports entrepreneurship by finding, celebrating, and scaling Africa’s young entrepreneurs between the ages of 15 and 22.

Introduced last year, the Anzisha Media Prize is a partner award for a young media professional that seeks to recognize and celebrate their traction in shaping the African narrative around youth entrepreneurship.  These professionals feature African entrepreneurship, finding and sharing compelling business stories that are both relevant for African job creation and appeal to a young audience. By awarding the Media Prize, Anzisha encourages all media professionals on the African continent to focus on the theme of youth entrepreneurship.

Nominees for the award were selected by reaching out to young entrepreneurs and investigating what media sources were impactful. Many media sources stood out for their focus on youth entrepreneurship and quality of content. The winning journalist will receive an all-expenses paid trip to an African city of their choice, where they will cover a story on the success of youth entrepreneurship. The top three finalists won an all-expenses paid trip to South Africa for the Anzisha Prize Award Ceremony held in Johannesburg in October 2017.

The 2017 top nominees for the prize are:

Nozipho Mbanjwa

South Africa – CNBC Africa’s Young Money

Nozipho started working with CNBC Africa in 2013 and is involved in the broadcast of 5 shows to 48 countries, as an announcer or producer. Young Money is targeted at youth, covering their views on economic affairs as well as their potential to impact the economy through entrepreneurship.

Siya Mdlalose

South Africa – SABC’s Making Moves

Siya has held numerous roles in TV and radio broadcasting, but is best known for SABC1’s cultural series Kulcha Kwest. In Making Moves, Siya profiles young local entrepreneurs, increasing these businesses’ visibility and inspiring more South Africans to start businesses of their own.

Sam Wakoba

Kenya – TechMoran

Sam founded his Nairobi-based technology media site in 2012 to highlight and promote Africa’s dynamic tech-preneur scene, emphasizing the stories of young tech innovators and startup founders.

The Anzisha Prize is excited to announce that Nozipho Mbanjwa was honored as the winner during the Anzisha Prize Gala on October 24th, 2017.  The Prize looks forward to collaborating with all of its Media Partners to advance Youth Entrepreneurship on the continent.
